Knox County Jail: Mission Statement

The Mission of the Knox County Jail is to protect the public; to provide a safe, secure, and professional environment, which, when possible, embraces direct supervision principles in the management of detainees; and, through role-modeling and programs, to equip detainees with the means to live a productive and law-abiding lifestyle.

  •  We believe people can change, and that we have an obligation to assist them in that process
  •  We commit to professional integrity and fiscal responsibility
  •  We value the dignity and respect of inmates, staff, and visitors
  •  We believe in the importance of teamwork
  •  We value the application of best practices in the field of corrections
  •  We encourage growth and learning
Our jail was constructed in 1991 with a capacity of 56. We currently have a variance allowing us to house 86 inmates.  The Knox County Correctional Facility has a very unique role within the State of Maine.  Knox County is the only county that has three state prison facilitys located within the county, which adds a considerable amount of responsibilities to the correctional facility.  The county has its owns Transport Teams, which at times are extremely busy because they are responsible for all transports to the Courts.  Juveniles are transported to appropriate holding facilities and are only at the Knox County Correctional Facility until Juvenile Probation and Parole decides what action to take.
